Fornovo 1495

In this week's Thursday our club will be changed into polling station, so our gaming night was moved for Tuesday instead. As I did not not have any game planned for that night I have joined to the game organised by Michael. He was desperate to try his new toys from Italian Wars and he choose the Battle of Fornovo, fought 6th of July 1495 and as Jack supported Michael with his figures we were able to play the full size battle on very tiny table (6'x4'). That was to speed up the game and not waste time for unnecessary maneuvering. For the game we used Pike and Shotte rules.
Do gry użyliśmy zasad Pike and Shotte.

2. The game. Gra.

According to our (French) plan, we were going to push our whole infantry to block the river crossings (all fords and the bridge) and with our cavalry push back the Italian cavalry, which was on our bank. Thanks those actions we were expected that we will create the safe way for our loot. We both agreed that this is the simlest plan and it should worked well, however as lerned with the past games, the reality is not always fit the plans...

Game started with my artillery bombardment, however this time not very accurate. Our infantry managed to take its positions on the river bank very quickly, but cavalry did not managed to take their positions and to be honest gets disordered because of my actions. The price was quite huge I had to paid for that mistake. First the Italian cavalry (Stradioti and Men-At-Arms) charged on my guns from the flank. Surprisingly they had been pushed back and when my guns were ready to fire, one of the guns explodes (effect of triple ones on my dice)...

That explosion causes a lot of chaos between my artillery. Italian cavalrymen just destroyed one gun after another. Finally when all guns have been lost, Italians got my unprepared Man-At-Arms. Smashed them and then withdraw to regroup. That was only temporary succes of the Italians. Destroying my Man-At-Arms created free way for the charge of our Gendarmes. I used that opportunity and soon Italian cavalry was pushed off the table. That action created free way to Paris for our wagons with loot and the king!

Worth mentioning is that our infantry totally blocked Italian action from the other bank of the river. By blocking the crossings, they prevent the main Italian forces to support their cavalry. We managed to get the much better result than the French got in real battle. It was very good game with a lot of very nice figures.

  5. Wow! I would have dearly loved to have been playing in this game as Fornovo is one of the most interesting battles of The Great Italian Wars and full of what if's as the engagement wasn't really a full battle as such.

    Brilliant stuff Bartek.

    Darrell.
